The Oral Round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition was held on 4 – 5 February 2006 in Armenia Marriott Hotel in Yerevan. This is the 6th Jessup Competition, which the Armenian Young Lawyers Association organizes in Armenia.
Thirteen teams from the law schools of Yerevan and the regions had applied for participation in the National Round. Seven of these teams participated in the Oral Round of the National Competition.
The topic of the competition of this year was rather interesting and actual, and raised the issues of multinational corporations involvement in human rights violations, and sovereignty over natural resources. The law students tried to prove the issue of succession and/or continuation status of both states, and argued about the self-determination, as well as of the interests of the ethnic nation.
The teams from the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University and “MYUD” Law Institute met in the final round.
The team from the law department of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University was announced the winner of the National Round of the 2006 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The team’s memorial was announced the best as well. Ara Khzmalyan from the law department of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University was announced the Best Oralist of the National Round.
The team from the law department of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University will take part in the International Round of the Jessup Law Moot Court Competition in Washington on March 26 – April 2, 2006.
The Law Foundation of Armenia and “LEGAL ALLIANCE” Law Firm were the co-organizers of the Competition this year. The National Round was organized with the financial support of the US Embassy in Armenia. “Armenia”, “AR,” “Yerevan,” and “Yerkir Media” TV Companies, as well as “Im Iravunk” (My Right) Newspaper and Radio “Liberty” covered the process of the Competition.
